Error message when you try to repair, uninstall, or install Visual Studio Team System 2008 after you install an update that adds a new Windows Installer feature: "A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components"


Symptoms

You try to repair, to install, or to uninstall Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2008 by using one of the following channels:
  • Add or Remove Programs
  • The VSTS 2008 installation media
Wen you do this, you receive the following error message:
A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling setup.
This problem occurs when you install an update that adds a new Windows Installer feature to VSTS 2008. For example, you install the security update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 952241.

This problem occurs because the new Windows Installer feature is incompatible with the setup components for VSTS 2008.

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Visual Studio 2008. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
