Error message when you upgrade Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0: "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 database export failed"

Symptoms

When you upgrade Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, you receive the following error message in the Environmental Diagnostic wizard:
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 database export failed.
Additionally, the following error messages are logged in the Application event log.
Error message 1
Type: Error
Event ID: 17207
Description: Open: Operating system error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) occurred while creating or opening file 'C:\Program files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\MSCRM_Config mdf.'
Error message 2
Type: Error
Event ID: 17204
Description: Open failed. Could not open file C:\Program files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\MSCRM_Config mdf for file number 0. OS error 2(The system cannot file the file specified.)
You also receive the following error message in the CRM40Setup.log file:
Error| Check ExportXmlValidator : Failure: Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 database export failed.
Note By default, the CRM40Setup.log file is in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\InstallingUser\Application Data\Microsoft\MSCRM\Logs

Cause

This problem occurs because the user account that you use to log on to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 does not have the Microsoft Dynamics CRM System Administrator role.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, make sure that the user account that you use to log on to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 has the System Administrator role. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.
  2. Click Settings, click Settings in the Settings pane, click Business Unit Settings, and then click Users.
  3. In the View list, click Enabled Users.
  4. Double-click the user account that you want to use.
  5. Click Roles. Then, make sure that the user account has the System Administrator role.
