Error message when you try to connect to a print queue in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006be)"

Symptoms

On a client that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you try to connect to a print queue that is hosted on Windows Server 2003, on Windows XP, or on Windows 2000 Server. When you do this, the connection to the printer cannot be established.

Additionally, the "Point and Print" feature throws one of the following error messages, depending on your situation.

When you use an administrator account
Connect to Printer
-----------------------------
Windows cannot connect to the printer.
Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006be).
Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.

Connect to Printer

Windows cannot connect to the printer.
Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006be).
You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer.
Note The "0x000006be" error code indicates that the remote procedure call failed.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Hewlett-Packard (HP) print driver uses an HPBmini.dll file ("HP Mini Installer") whose version is earlier than 1.0.0.13.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, obtain a newer version of the HP printer driver that is compatible with Windows Vista and with Windows Server 2008. To do this, visit the following HP Web site:Note Before you install the new HP printer driver, you can make sure that the version of the HPBmini.dll file is 1.0.0.16, 1.0.0.18, or a later version. To do this, extract the driver to a temporary folder, and then verify the version of the HPBmini.dll file.
