Known issues

Tool Issue descriptionWorkaround
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Build-to-Build Upgrade The Remote Server Administration Tools Beta does not support build-to-build upgrading to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Reinstall RSAT after you upgrade the operating system.
SMTP ToolsIn the SMTP snap-in, an “Unsupported Interface” dialog box opens when you click the Sessions icon. To work around this issue, close the SMTP snap-in, and then use administrative credentials to open a Command Prompt window. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:
cd %windows%\system32\inetsrv
regsvr32 smtpadm.dll
Open the SMTP snap-in, and then try to click the Sessions again.
Share and Storage Management snap-in The Edit NFS configuration operation in the Share and Storage Management snap-in does not work. This action requires the Nfsconfigguide tool, and this tool is not supported in the RSAT package. To manage the Network File System (NFS) on a remote server, use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to that server.
GPMC snap-in The Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) snap-in works correctly. However, by default, Group Policy Preferences client-side extension logging is disabled. To enable client-side extension logging, an administrator must turn on logging by using the appropriate Group Policy settings. These settings are not included in RSAT.RSAT does not install the GroupPolicyPreferences.ADMX or GroupPolicyPreferences.ADML file on the Windows Vista-based client.

To work around this issue, download the GroupPolicyPreferences.ADMX and GroupPolicyPreferences.ADML files. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Install the files on the computer that you are using to perform Group Policy management. Or, if you have implemented the central store, put these files there.
DHCP server toolsRemote management of Windows 2000 DHCP servers is not supported.

You can use the Windows Server 2003 Administration Pack to remotely administer Windows 2000 DHCP servers, or you can connect to the DHCP servers by using Remote Desktop Connection.
The Failover Clustering snap-inThe Validate a Cluster Configuration test function in the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in does not recognize the following versions of Windows Server 2008:
  • Storage Enterprise Server Edition
  • Windows Server Datacenter Edition without Hyper-V
  • Windows Server Enterprise Edition without Hyper-V
  • Windows Server Datacenter Core without Hyper-V Edition
  • Windows Server Enterprise Core without Hyper-V Edition
This failure causes the validation test to fail, and the cluster will not be supported. However, the failure will not prevent you from using Failover Clustering.
None.
