Symptoms

You cannot deploy software updates on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Additionally, a Svchost.exe process may close unexpectedly.

When this problem occurs, an event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: (100)
Event ID: 1000
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: Computer
Description:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version Version, faulting module msi.dll, version Version, fault address Address.

This problem occurs because of an access violation in the Msi.dll module.
