Error message when you update an e-mail activity in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0: "SQL Server Timeout expired"

Symptoms

When you update an e-mail activity in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 stops responding. After about 30 seconds, you receive the following error message:
SQL Server Timeout expired. For more information, contact your system administrator.
For example, this problem occurs if you change the value in the Regarding field on an e-mail activity form.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The e-mail activity is created by another user.
  • The e-mail activity has been shared with you by another user.
