The To field of a message in the Sent Items folder displays question marks for Japanese display names, for Chinese display names, or for Cyrillic display names

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 organization, you receive e-mail messages from external recipients whose display names are in Japanese, in Chinese, or in Cyrillic. You use Microsoft Office Outlook to reply to one of these messages. However, when you view your reply message in the Sent Items folder in Outlook, the To field of the reply message displays question marks for the display name. When the Exchange 2003 administrator opens the recipient properties of the original received message, the question marks are displayed in the From field.

Note This problem occurs only if Outlook is running in Online mode.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
