Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

Symptoms

When an instance of SQL Server 2005 is under a heavy load, the following error message may be logged in the SQL Server 2005 Errorlog file:
Error: 17187, Severity: 16, State: 1.

SQL Server is not ready to accept new client connections; the connection has been closed. Wait a few minutes before trying again. If you have access to the error log, look for the informational message that indicates that SQL Server is ready before trying to connect again.
Additionally, the following error message may be logged in the Errorlog file:
Error: 17194, Severity: 16, State: 1.

The server was unable to load the SSL provider library needed to log in; the connection has been closed. SSL is used to encrypt either the login sequence or all communications, depending on how the administrator has configured the server. See Books Online for information on this error message: 0x2746.

Cause

This problem occurs when certain Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) functions are called outside the SQL Server process and the SSL functions are blocked. The blocked SSL functions may cause the I/O completion port (IOCP) thread not to accept new connections and to slow down existing connections when the thread processes read or write completions. The "17194" error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section occurs when the client resets the connections after earlier connection failures.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

More Information

This problem only occurs on computers that can create SSL encryption. When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, SQL Server 2005 may stop responding and not accept new connections. In a clustered environment, SQL Server 2005 resources might automatically fail over to other nodes.
