Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Office Excel 2007 on a computer that has SQL Server 2005 installed.
  • You use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) on the computer.
In this scenario, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
Error message 1
Unexpected error occurred: 'Error in the application.'
Error message 2
Unexpected error occurred: 'Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.'
Error message 3
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (msmgdsrv)
Error message 4
The designer cannot display calculations because there are one or more syntax errors in the MDX script. To display these calculations, resolve the syntax errors by switching to Calculations view, clicking Script View on the toolbar, and then editing the MDX script.
Error message 5
The syntax check failed with the following message:
'Error in the application.'
Error message 6
Error in the application. (msmgdsrv)
Error message 7
Query preparation failed.
The following operations are known to trigger these error messages:
  • Using SQL Server Management Studio
You try to create a new role or edit an existing role for a SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services database. In the Create Role or Edit Role dialog box, you follow these steps:
    1. Click Dimension Data in the left pane.
    2. Click the Advance tab in the right pane.
    3. Click Check.
Additionally, the same error messages may occur when you follow these steps in the Create Role or Edit Role dialog box:
    1. Click Cell Data in the left pane.
    2. Click the Advance tab in the right pane.
    3. Click Check.
  • Using SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio
You create or open an Analysis Service project. In the cube designer, you perform one of the following operations:
    • Click the Calculations tab.
    • Click the Actions tab, and then perform operations where Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) syntax check is invoked.
    • Click the KPI tab, and then perform operations where Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) syntax check is invoked.
    • Click the Perspectives tab if calculations are present in the cube.
    • Click the Translations tab if calculations are present in the cube.
Additionally, the problem occurs when you use the Report Server Project Wizard to create a report that uses an Analysis Services data source. In the Report Wizard dialog box, you perform one of the following operations:
    • Click Query Builder, and thenclick Add Calculated Member in the Query Builder dialog box. In the Calculated Member Builder dialog box, click Check.
    • Click Query Builder, build a query, and then click OK.

Cause

This issue occurs because a newer version of the Msmgdsrv.dll file is installed when you install Office Excel 2007. The newer version of the Msmgdsrv.dll file is incompatible with the older version of the Msmdlocal.dll file that SQL Server Management Studio and SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio will load to perform the operations that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

Restart information

You must restart the computer if the installer has to replace files that are being used. To avoid restarting the computer, close all SQL Server Analysis Services tools and clients. Additionally, you must stop Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) if the server is configured to provide HTTP access. If you have installed SQL Server Analysis Services as a named instance, you should also stop the SQL Server Browser service because the Msmdredir.dll component of the SQL Server Browser service is updated when you apply this hotfix.

Registry information

You do not have to change the registry.

More Information

This hotfix changes the functionality of the Msmdlocal.dll file. After you apply this hotfix, the Msmdlocal.dll file will first try to load the Msmgdsrv.dll file from the same directory where the Msmdlocal.dll was loaded. Additionally, this hotfix installs a compatible version of the Msmgdsrv.dll file to the locations that are used by SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio and SQL Server Management Studio.

This problem occurs in both the original release (RTM) version of SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The version of the hotfix package that you should request depends on the version of the tool that you are running.

If you are running the original release version of SQL Server 2005, you must request the hotfix package for version 9.00.1557. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

926421 FIX: You receive error messages when you use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio after you install Microsoft Office Excel 2007 on a computer that has SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services installed

If you are running the SP1 version of SQL Server 2005, you must request the hotfix package for version 9.00.2199.

To determine which version of the components you are running, follow the appropriate steps.

For SQL Server Management Studio, follow these steps:
  1. Start SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. On the Help menu, click About.
  3. In the About Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio dialog box, examine the version of the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio component and the version of the Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools component.

The original release version of these components will be 9.00.1399.00.

The SP1 version of these components will be 9.00.2047.00 or a later version.
For SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, follow these steps:
  1. Start SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.
  2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Visual Studio.
  3. In the About Microsoft Visual Studio dialog box, click SQL Server Analysis Services in the Installed products list, and then examine the Product details field.

The original release version of SQL Server Analysis Services will be 9.00.1399.00.

The SP1 version of SQL Server Analysis Services will be 9.00.2047.00 or a later version.
  4. In the About Microsoft Visual Studio dialog box, click SQL Server Reporting Services in the Installed products list, and then examine the Product details field.

The original release version of SQL Server Reporting Services will be 9.00.1399.00.
The SP1 version of SQL Server Reporting Services will be 9.00.2047.00 or a later version.
