"Access denied" error when you use a Windows Store app to configure printer property settings in Windows

This article describes an issue that occurs when you use a Windows Store app in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. An update is available to resolve this issue. Before you install this update, check out the Prerequisites section.

Symptoms

This issue occurs when you use the Windows Store device apps (WSDA) to write values for the queue property bag for printers.

Notes
  • The queue property bags are used to store print configurations and printer properties (such as installable options).
  • WSDA for printers only works with printers that support the v4 printer driver model.

Cause

The issue occurs because a call that sets printer settings does not have admin access to the printer. Therefore, the Windows Store app cannot write values to the queue property bags.

How to obtain this update

Method 1: Windows Update

This update is provided as an Optional update from Windows Update.
How to obtain the update from Windows Update
To obtain this update from Windows Update, follow these steps:
  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. In the search box, type Windows Update, and then tap or click Windows Update.
  3. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  4. If you see a message telling you that optional updates are available, or telling you to review optional updates, click the message to view the optional updates.
  5. In the list, select the check box for update 3034348 under Optional, and then tap or click Install.
