FIX: "Failure encountered while attempting to get message from queue" error in MQSC Adapter

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use the Client-Based BizTalk Adapter for WebSphere MQ (MQSC Adapter) to connect to IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1.
  • You successfully receive messages from the IBM WebSphere.
  • You apply Host Integration Server 2010 Cumulative Update 9 (CU9) to a Host Integration Server 2010 system or Host Integration Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (CU1) to a Host Integration Server 2013 system.
In this scenario, you receive error messages that resemble the following when you try to access messages from IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1 that you successfully received earlier:

Event ID: 5740
Source: BizTalk Server
Description:
The adapter "MQSC" raised an error message. Details "Failure encountered while attempting to get message from queue. queue = queue_name, queueManager = queue_manager, reasonCode = 2009".

Note Reason Code 2009 is defined in IBM WebSphere MQ as MQRC_CONNECTION_BROKEN.

Cause

This problem occurs because the MQSC Adapter was updated in Host Integration Server 2010 Cumulative Update 9 (CU9) and in Host Integration Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (CU1) to resolve the problem that's described in the following Knowledge Base articles:

2910875 FIX: "No Disassemble stage components can recognize the data" error when messages are received from IBM WebSphere MQ

2912428 FIX: The MQSC Adapter generates excessive network traffic when it receives messages from IBM WebSphere message queues

These updates change the process that the MQSC Adapter uses to determine the length of an incoming message and the conversion of the received message. Specifically, the change to the message conversion process causes a message conversion problem when the MQSC Adapter is communicating with IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1.

Workaround

To work around this problem, remove Host Integration Server 2010 Cumulative Update 9 (CU9) or Host Integration Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (CU1) from the affected Host Integration Server system.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

After you apply this update, the MQSC Adapter does not use the message conversion routine that was added in the referenced updates when it connects to IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS versions earlier than V7.1.

Additionally, the MQSC Adapter is updated to correct a problem that prevented SyncPoint transactions (Transaction Supported = Yes) from working when it connects to IBM WebSphere MQ for z/OS.
