Symptoms

When you try to paste a text message in a Lync 2013 instant message conversation, you may encounter the following issues:
  • When you paste a Rich Text Format (RTF) text message, an emoticon is applied. For example, if you paste mailto:someone@example.com, the ":s" string in the text becomes an emoticon.
  • When you paste a Rich Text Format (RTF) text message, existing input text becomes emoticons. For example, the following content is displayed:

    :) :) :) <Pasted text>
  • When you paste a plain-text message at the beginning or the middle of a typed text message, emoticons are generated in the conversation. For example, the following content is displayed:

    :)<Pasted plain text>:)
  • Emoticons are generated out of a partly pasted and partly typed text message.
  • When you type a text message after the pasted text message, the typed text message loses color and formatting.
  • When you copy a file into the conversation, an emoticon tag is generated in the file path.
