Improvements to crash dump file handling in WER in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

Symptoms

When Windows generates crash dump files from Windows Store apps on Windows 8.1-based or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computers, the files are collected by Windows Error Reporting (WER) for analysis. Currently, these crash dump files do not capture exception objects that are generated by the common language runtime (CLR) for crashes in the CLR code. Therefore, WER cannot adequately analyze failures in these crash dump files.

Resolution

Update information

To resolve this issue, install update rollup 2928680. For more information about how to obtain this update rollup package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
2928680 Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: March 2014
Note After you apply this update, CLR can pass the language exception object to WER. It makes Windows much more reliable.
