Update helps unmanaged Office 2010 users work with Microsoft RMS in Windows

View products that this article applies to.

Introduction

This article describes an update for Microsoft Digital Rights Management (MSDRM) clients in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2. This update helps unmanaged Microsoft Office 2010 users open content that is protected by Microsoft Rights Management service (Microsoft RMS).

This update fixes the following issues.
Issue 1
Assume that you run an application that uses MSDRM to open content that is protected by Microsoft RMS on a computer. If the computer does not meet the prerequisites, you will keep being prompted for your credentials. Additionally, this issue persists even when the user enters the correct credentials.

After the update is installed, MSDRM checks whether the computer meets the prerequisites for authentication against Microsoft RMS when the client sends activation requests. If the computer does not meet the prerequisites, MSDRM displays the following messages:
The content you are trying to open is protected with a cloud based Rights Management Service, and your client cannot consume this content as currently configured. Click on the link below to find out how to enable your client to consume this content.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=290821

This application is configured to work with your organization's cloud based Rights Management Service, but your computer is not yet activated against your organization. In order to work with content protected between different organizations you need to activate your client first, or use a newer version of your application.
For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=316934
Issue 2
When you run an application that uses MSDRM to open content that is across tenants, the application cannot open the content.

After the update is installed, MSDRM can open the content across tenants as expected.

More Information

You must configure MSDRM clients to meet the following prerequisites in order to authenticate against Microsoft RMS:
  • A version of MSDRM is installed that supports Cryptographic Mode 2.
  • The activation URL is set in the registry when the client tries to authenticate without accessing content.
  • Sign-In Assistant is installed on the computer.
  • The federation home realm is set in the registry.
