Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problems described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To install this hotfix package, you must have Word 2013 installed.

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Registry information

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

After you install the hotfix package, follow these steps to resolve the issue in which Word uses more memory than expected and scrolling performance is worse than expected.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type UseSmallestImageCachingStrategy, and then press Enter.
5. In the Details pane, right-click UseSmallestImageCachingStrategy, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Exit Registry Editor.
