A GAL related client-only message rule does not take effect in Outlook in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you create a global address list (GAL) related client-only message rule by using Microsoft Office Outlook in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment.  In this situation, the rule does not take effect. For example, you create a client-only message rule that moves email messages to a specific folder if the sender belongs to a GAL address book. However, the email messages remain in the Inbox folder.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Address Book service does not handle the query that contains a filter on the PR_ADDRTYPE property. The query is sent by Outlook when the rule is applied. Because the property does not map Active Directory property, the MAPI_E_TOO_COMPLEX exception is thrown.
