Functionality issues on USB devices that are connected to a Windows 7-based computer that has an Intel platform

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have a Windows 7-based computer that is running on an Intel Atom Z670 processor and on an Intel SM35 Express chipset. In this situation, you may experience functionality issues on full-speed and low-speed USB devices. For example, you may experience the following issues:
  • The response time from a USB touchscreen device or mouse is slower than expected.
  • Bluetooth devices stop responding.
Note To recover from this issue, the Bluetooth device or the computer must be restarted. If the Bluetooth device is an internal device, you must power-cycle the computer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) host controller in Windows 7 resets the USB device when the USB EHCI host controller reports missed micro-frame errors.

Note For more information about this issue, see the Intel SM35 Express chipset specification update.

Resolution

This hotfix enables a mechanism to retry missed micro-frame errors by using the Soft-Retry functionality. For more information about the Soft-Retry functionality, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
908673 Problems may occur when you try to transfer files to or from a device that is connected to a USB 2.0 hub
Note The hotfix that is introduced in this KB article is updated to a new version. This new version of the hotfix resolves an issue in which a "Device driver software was not successfully installed" balloon is displayed when you install a new USB device. This issue occurs if you install the earlier version of the hotfix. You must reinstall the hotfix if the file versions of the USB drivers are older than the file versions that are listed in this KB article.

To check the file versions of the USB drivers that are installed on your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Locate the %WINDIR%\System32\Drivers folder by using Windows Explorer.
  2. Right-click Usbehci.sys, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the Details tab, and then check the value of the File version property.
  4. You can determine whether you have the earlier version of the hotfix installed if the value matches one of the following values:
    • 6.1.7600.16791
    • 6.1.7600.20940
    • 6.1.7601.17591
    • 6.1.7601.21700
  5. Repeat step 1 to step 4 for Usbhub.sys and for Usbport.sys.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

File information

The global version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias. Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.
Windows 7 file information notes
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
    VersionProductMilestoneService branch
    6.1.760
    0.16xxx
    Windows 7RTMGDR
    6.1.760
    0.21xxx
    Windows 7RTMLDR
    6.1.760
    1.17xxx
    Windows 7SP1GDR
    6.1.760
    1.21xxx
    Windows 7SP1LDR
  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, extremely important issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
