Note The hotfix that is introduced in this KB article is updated to a new version. This new version of the hotfix resolves an issue in which a "Device driver software was not successfully installed" balloon is displayed when you install a new USB device. This issue occurs if you install the earlier version of the hotfix. You must reinstall the hotfix if the file versions of the USB drivers are older than the file versions that are listed in this KB article.
To check the file versions of the USB drivers that are installed on your computer, follow these steps:
- Locate the %WINDIR%\System32\Drivers folder by using Windows Explorer.
- Right-click Usbehci.sys, and then click Properties.
- Select the Details tab, and then check the value of the File version property.
- You can determine whether you have the earlier version of the hotfix installed if the value matches one of the following values:
- 6.1.7600.16791
- 6.1.7600.20940
- 6.1.7601.17591
- 6.1.7601.21700
- Repeat step 1 to step 4 for Usbhub.sys and for Usbport.sys.

Windows 7 file information notes
- The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
Version | Product | Milestone | Service branch |
---|
6.1.760 0.16xxx | Windows 7 | RTM | GDR |
6.1.760 0.21xxx | Windows 7 | RTM | LDR |
