A program that requires you to use a smart card stops responding in a remote desktop connection in Windows Server 2008, in Windows Vista, in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You make a remote desktop connection to a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • You run a program that requires you to use a smart card in the remote desktop connection.
  • The program exits without calling the smart card exit routines.

Note The SCardEndTransaction function is called in the smart card exit routines.
  • You run a program that requires you to use the smart card.
In this scenario, all programs that require you to use the smart card do not successfully connect to the smart card and stop responding.

Cause

The issue occurs because the smart card service cannot end all transaction for redirected smart card readers in a process when the process exits without calling the smart card exit routines.

If a thread calls the SCardBeginTransaction function and then exits without calling the SCardEndTransaction function for any reason, such as incorrect design, a mutex object is not released. If another thread then calls the SCardConnect function to establish a connection to the same smart card, the second thread hangs because the mutex object was not released.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, install the following hotfix on the affected computers that are running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
After you install the hotfix, the smart card service ends all transactions for redirected smart card readers in a process if the process exits without calling the SCardEndTransaction function.

Hotfix information
