View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You use the Microsoft Windows Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) utility (Msimsp.exe) to generate a Windows Installer update (.msp) file. The .msp file contains many files.
In this scenario, the Msimsp.exe utility does not generate the .msp file. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Failed to create patch. Error code: 0xC00E5201

Cause

This issue occurs because the Msimsp.exeutility does not work after it reaches a heap size of 4 megabytes (MB). That is the maximum heap size for compound files. Therefore, Msimsp.exe cannot generate the .msp file.
