Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a database availability group (DAG) that contains two or more member servers in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) environment.
  • You configure replication between the member servers of the DAG.
  • You try to back up Exchange data from the DAG.
In this scenario, the following event is logged in the Application log on the member servers:

Additionally, the backup operation may fail when the backup application tries to access the locked log file.

Cause

This issue occurs when the log file is renamed during the backup operation. It takes more than 300 milliseconds to synchronize the new name. This is longer than the time that is expected by the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication Service service. Therefore, the log file is still locked when the backup application tries to access the log file.
