An update is available for Internet Explorer: December 14, 2010

INTRODUCTION

This update addresses an issue that is introduced by the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
2416400 MS 10-090: Cumulative Security update for Windows Internet Explorer

KB2416400 contains a fix that turns off the automatic detection of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) encoding. However, some software uses a component in Internet Explorer to interpret Japanese email messages that are in HTML format. Therefore, the content of the email message is displayed in unreadable code because the JIS encoding is not automatically detected.

Note Users who have installed update KB2416400 from the Microsoft Download Center but have not installed this update (KB2467659) will be offered security update KB2416400 through Windows Update. To work around this issue, install KB2467659 from the Microsoft Download Center or when it is offered by Windows Update.

If you prefer not to install update 2467659, you can manually apply the registry settings that are configured by the update. To do this, follow these steps:

For all supported x86-based versions and x64-based versions of Windows, you have to create a FEATURE_DISABLE_ISO_2022_JP_SNIFFING registry subkey under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl
To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_DISABLE_ISO_2022_JP_SNIFFING to name the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type Iexplore.exe to name the new entry, and then press ENTER.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  8. Type 1, and then click OK.
  9. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  10. Type * to name the new entry, and then press ENTER.
  11. Type 0, click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
Note If you have Windows Internet Explorer 6 installed, you have to create an additional Explorer.exe registry entry under the FEATURE_DISABLE_ISO_2022_JP_SNIFFING registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_ISO_2022_JP_SNIFFING
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type Explore.exe to name the new entry, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. Type 1, click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
Additionally, for all supported x64-based versions of Windows, you have to create a FEATURE_DISABLE_ISO_2022_JP_SNIFFING registry subkey under the following registry subkey:

To do this, follow these steps:

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type Iexplore.exe to name the new entry, and then press ENTER.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.
