FIX: You are prompted for a password every time that the SnaBase process starts when you try to connect to a server that is running Host Integration Server 2006, 2009, or 2010 in a non-trusted Windows domain or workgroup

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use your user credentials to log on to a client computer that is running Microsoft Host Integration Server 2006, 2009, or 2010.
  • You configure the client computer to use alternative credentials to connect to Host Integration Server.
  • The client computer is located in a non-trusted Windows domain or workgroup.

In this scenario, to finish the connection to the server that is running Host Integration Server, you have to type the password for the specified user account in the Microsoft Host Integration Server Logon dialog box every time that the SnaBase process starts.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Host Integration Server Configuration Tool tries to validate the user credentials that are specified during the configuration process. If the user credentials cannot be validated, the Host Integration Server Configuration Tool does not encrypt and store the password that the user supplied. This causes the user to have to enter the password for the specified user account every time that the SnaBase process starts. The account validation can fail if the credentials that the user supplied exist in a Windows domain or in a workgroup that is not trusted and where the Host Integration Server client is running.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix. After the hotfix is installed, the Host Integration Server Configuration Tool does not try to validate the credentials that the user supplied. The credentials (user name, domain, and password) are stored in the registry for use by the Host Integration Server client. The password is encrypted before it is stored in the registry. Then, the user is no longer prompted to enter the credentials when the user connects to a server that is running Host Integration Server.
