You receive misleading information when you run the "New-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1" script on an Exchange Server 2010 server

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You run one of the following cmdlets without specifying a mailbox that the default test account is used in the Exchange Management Shell on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 server:
  • Test-WebServicesConnectivity
  • Test-OwaConnectivity
  • Test-ActiveSyncConnectivity
  • Test-ImapConnectivity
  • Test-PopConnectivity
  • Test-PowerShellConnectivity
  • Test-EcpConnectivity
  • Test-OutlookWebServices
If a test account does not exist, you can run the New-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 script to create the test account. In this scenario, you receive the following message:

Please enter a temporary secure password for creating test users. For security, the password will be changed regularly and automatically by the system.

However, the password is changed by the system only when the following conditions are true:
  • The Exchange organization is monitored by a System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 server.
  • The SCOM server has Exchange Server 2010 Management Pack for SCOM 2007 installed.
Note The help information about Exchange Server 2010 states that "The password for the test account is typically reset every 7 days.".

Cause

This issue occurs because the Set-CasConnectivityTestCredentials cmdlet and the Set-UMConnectivityTestCredentials cmdlet perform a password reset. However, these two cmdlets are not available in the regular Exchange Management shell. These two cmdlets are only run by the Monitoring service in the SCOM server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
2529939 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1
After you apply this update, clear information is generated when you run the New-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 script to create a test account. The information points out that the password will be changed if SCOM is installed.
