Event ID 82 may be logged in the System log after you extend the protected dynamic volume on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a dynamic volume on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.
  • You enable the snapshot protection mode on the volume.
  • You configure the volume size to be extended.
  • You regularly create snapshots for the volume. Some snapshots are created before the volume is extended. Other snapshots are created after the volume is extended.
In this scenario, you may encounter the following issues.

Issue 1:

When you try to delete some snapshots of the volume that are created before the volume is used, the operation fails.

Issue 2:

You cannot bring the volume online after you take the volume offline. For example, this behavior occurs after you restart the computer. Additionally, the following event is added into the System log:

Event ID: 82

Task Category: None

Level: Error

Keywords: Classic

User: N/A
Computer: computer name
Description:

Volume name is offline for shadow copy protection. A shadow copy meta data corruption was detected. Please try clearing the protection fault or restart the computer. If all else fails, revert out of shadow copy protection mode to reclaim the use of the volume while losing the shadow copies.
